Kyra was captured in Pine Island Sound, aboard the RV McQueggie. Kyra measures 53.6 cm curved carapace length and is considered a subadult. Because the tag is programmed for 24 hr on / 24 hr off to conserve the battery, Kyra's track updates every second day.
Kyra will be involved in one of the first stable isotope studies of Kemp's ridley turtles in the Gulf of Mexico. The tracking history will define the seasonal habitats and home ranges, and more ridleys will be tracked in the coming seasons.
Did you notice that Kyra exited the Charlotte Harbor as the temperature dropped suddenly with a major cold front? The departure and subsequent move to the Florida Keys put her into warmer sea surface temperatures.
After a winter shift, and with coastal waters warming, Kyra's ventured northward, returning to Charlotte Harbor with the warmer water temperature and is within a couple of miles of her initial captures site. She seems to be hanging out on the backside of Sanibel off an embayment called Shallow Mouth, adjacent to Tarpon Bay.
Water temperature and salinity near Kyra's current locations can be followed at Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation's RECON (River, Estuary, and Coastal Observing Network). http://recon.sccf.org/recent/index.shtml
