Background
This turtle is named in the traditional manner in which the Adali people of the region give names to their female children. Dede (pronounced "dayday") is the given name to the first female born into the family. Alavanyor (pronounced "Ala von your") is the name of the fishing village where she nested. Therefore, she is Dede Alavanyor (the first from Alavanyor fishing village).
This turtle ascended the beach in front of Alavanyor fishing village (~6 km west of Ada Foah, Ghana) at approximately 1:30 am on 23 Dec, 2009. The survey team found her at 1:55 am just as she was beginning to dig an egg chamber. She nested 4.5 m above the high tide line immediately beside a traditional fishing boat sitting on shore. This turtle has carapace measurements of 68 cm (CCL) and 69 cm (CCW). She deposited 113 eggs. This turtle did not have flipper tags indicating this is the first time our survey team has seen this turtle. We installed flipper tags GHA382 and GHA383 to her left and right fore flippers, respectively.
