Introduction

This sea turtle project is part of the worldwide Danish Galathea 3 Expedition 2006-2007. Sea turtles were observed in the Atlantic Ocean during September and October 2006 while the Expedition sailed from the Azores to South Africa, passing the Cape verde Islands and sailing 200 NM from the west African coastline.

The turtles that we were able to get onboard the vessel were measured and tagged with conventional ROTO tags and SPOT 5 satellite transmitters from Wildlife Computers.

One juvenile leatherback turtle(CCL = 97,5 cm - 81 kg) was caught 200 nautic miles from the coast of Liberia. It was equippped with a harness and a satellite tag but unfortunately the transmitter only sended a few uplinks.

One Olive ridley was tagged off shore the Ghanian coast, this turtle - most probably a male due to its relatively large tail - was observed at the surface together with three other olive ridleys. Perhabs during a mating ritual. It was measured (CCL = 66,5 - 36 kg) and tagged.

Four female Olive ridley turtles were tagged in October at Ghana beaches after egglaying. And in January 2007 additional two Olive ridley's and five Leatherback turtles were equipped with satellite transmitters.
