Introduction
Punta Coyote is a rocky outcrop, on the northern border of the 19,000 hectare Marine Protected Area of the Caletas-Arío National Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge protects an olive ridley nesting beach where 1000 nests are laid per year. Occasional leatherbacks, Pacific green turtles and hawksbills are also recorded. This Pacific green turtle, "pillo" was caught during a hawksbill monitoring program by means of a 32 inch mesh net. Since we had never caught a green turtle before at the sight, and it was a juvenile, we decided to equip it with a satellite transmitter. Pretoma has been working with the nesting sea turtles of the areas since 2002, and was instrumental in the creation of the Wildlife Refuge and surrounding MPA in 2006. Since 2007 we are working on a responsible rose snapper fishery project with the fishermen of Coyote, and consolidating more MPAs in the area, like the recently created MPA of the Camaronal Wildlife Refuge. The information generated may help with the design and implementation of future management and conservation strategies.
