Background
This young peregrine falcon was born on the Norris Bridge, Virginia, USA. The nest was under the bridge on the support truss, hundreds of feet above the Rappahannock River. Each year falcon chicks born in bridge nests are removed and translocated to safe "hack" sites in the mountains. If allowed to fledge from their nests, they have only a 1-2% chance on survival. Chicks often get hit by cars or drown in the waters below the bridge while first learning to fly. This falcon is part of a reintroduction program co-sponsored by CCB and NPS to establish a breeding population of falcons to the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. This falcon disappeared in June 2008 in rural West Virginia. Volunteers searched the area but neither the falcon or transmitter were found.
