Background

Green turtle (Chelonia mydas) IUCN Status: Endangered with extinction

'Lightning' was rehabilitated by the Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project and released on December 6th 2012 after undergoing a 10 month rehabilitation period after being rescued by the Emirates Marine Environmental Group and suffering from severe debilitation. When Lightning was brought in to the project he weighed 75kg, at release he weighed a healthy 92kg! Lightning is a mature adult MALE green turtle, this is the first time the project has knowingly released a male turtle with a satellite tag. Lightning's satellite tag was kindly sponsored by the Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai, UAE.

Dubai's only turtle rehabilitation project is a collaboration between Jumeirah's Aquarium team and Dubai's Wildlife Protection Office with essential veterinary support provided by the Dubai Falcon Hospital and the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory. The project started in 2004 and has rehabilitated and released over 555 endangered sea turtles back into the wild since the start of 2009. Of these sea turtles, 13 have so far had satellite tags attached to evaluate the success of our turtle rehabilitation and research regional turtle movements. The DTRP aims to rescue, rehabilitate and release previously injured or sick animals back into the wild after a period of rehabilitation.

The tracking devices for this project have all been sponsored by different Dubai based properties within the Jumeirah Group as part of their commitment to supporting regional sea turtle conservation.
