Background
CAMILA was the first hawksbill of the second satellite tagging campaign in El Salvador to be equipped with a tag. Measuring 87 cm (CCL), she was tagged on July 13th 2009 at El Amor beach, within the Los Cóbanos Marine Protected Area, along the country’s western coast. Considering El Salvador’s status as the most important hawksbill nesting site in the eastern Pacific identified to date with approximately 80% of all documented nesting in the region, Camila and the other hawksbills from her cohort represent a crucial component to researchers’ efforts to conserve and recover the species in the region.
The tagging event was a joint effort between NOAA’s (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Southwest Fisheries Science Center, FUNZEL (Zoological Foundation of El Salvador), ICMARES (Marine Sciences Institute of the University of El Salvador), MARN (Salvadoran Ministry of the Environment), FUNDARRECIFE (Los Cóbanos Reef Foundation) and ICAPO (Eastern Pacific Hawksbill Initiative). We are particularly grateful to FUNDARRECIFE's local beach rangers for their dedication in the field and tireless efforts to conserve hawksbills in the region and to CENDEPESCA for their support.
