Background
This female loggerhead turtle was tracked using funds from Pepsi Kýbrýs as part of an ongoing study into the interaction of loggerhead turtles and Mediterranean artisanal fisheries.
The turtle is named 'Tricia' after Patricia Dann, a long term supporter of the Marine Turtle Conservation Project who has organised countless fundraiser events for the Marine Turtle Conservation Project through the Friends of SPoT (Society for the Protection of Turtles), raising vital funds for the project. Tricia also organises Karşıyaka Turtle Watch on Guzelyalı Beach.
We had been searching for a nesting loggerhead to track for several nights before we came accross our elusive subject. We believe this was her second nest, as although no nightwork is carried out on this beach this turtle has very distinctive tracks, with one back flipper print right in the middle of the carapace mark rather than having one each evenly on either side of it. We had thought that the flipper must have been damaged in some way, but when we saw her move it we realised that she has unusually high flexibility in this one flipper, causing her to be nicknamed 'yoga turtle'.
