Background
This young peregrine falcon was born on the Betsy Ross Bridge, New Jersey, USA. The nest was under the bridge on the support truss, hundreds of feet above the Delaware River. Each year falcon chicks born in bridge nests are removed and translocated to safe "hack" sites in the mountains. If allowed to fledge from their nests, they have only a 1-2% chance on survival. Chicks often get hit by cars or drown in the waters below the bridge while first learning to fly. This falcon is part of a reintroduction program sponsored by CCB, NJ Wildlife, and NPS to establish a breeding population of falcons in the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. Since his release in the summer of 2007, Ross has spent most of his time near Harper's Ferry, MD along the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.
