Shearwater #698 has remained within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and has especially focused on areas in northern Monterey Bay. The north bay is sheltered from strong NW to W winds that have been blowing 15 - 20 kts in recent weeks. Such conditions infuse the bay with relatively cooler waters upwelled to the north. Some scientists believe that under these conditions, forage fish such as northern Anchovy are more abundant in the northern bay. Perhaps this is why sooty shearwaters and lampara (small purse-seine) fishers seek these waters out each summer.
