Immediately after she was tagged, Helen migrated northwards, arriving at Hare Island in the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve on the 09.08.06. The last we heard from her was an inaccurate location on the 22.12.06 (not plotted), but it appears that the Reserve is her home. We are no longer receiving transmissions from her tag.

Background

Helen was the first ever turtle to be tagged in Sri Lanka and was tagged after her 4th nest in the 2006 season. She was named after Helen Gilligan, a volunteer English Teacher who had been working for the TCP for 5 months and was due to leave shortly after the satellite tagging programme. Helen's tag was supported by a grant from the UK Government's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) as a contribution to the Indian Ocean and South East Asian (IOSEA) Year of the Sea Turtle 2006.
