Background

"Fred" was found floating by the US Coast Guard Auxilliary on October 10, 2006 in Gloucester, VA. When Fred first came in, it appeared that he had a small crack on his head, probably due to a vessel interaction. However, radiographs revealed two fractures extending the entire length and width of his head. Fred also experienced severe neurological problems with symptoms that included circling, twitching, weakened left side, etc. Fred floated on the surface of his tank and had to be force fed or hand fed for over four months. Fred was given a very poor prognosis which is why this is such a great success for the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Team. Although Fred has recovered, due to the history of neurological problems, we are monitoring his movements with a transmitter. Fred was released with two other turtles that also spent some time in rehab: "Mighty Luke," a Kemp's ridley, had been entangled in fishing gear and lost his right rear flipper and half of is right front flipper; "CD Chill," a loggerhead, stayed in Virginia too long into the winter after hanging out in a hot ditch created by a local power plant. Also, check out Fred's myspace page: www.myspace.com/vaqstranding. There are pictures and video of all three turtles.
