Background

This was the first Osprey caught for the study by the capture team. After an early morning using a dho-gaza with no luck, this bird was captured on Jackson Lake using a fish noose. We were able to pull it down several hundred feet which was an amazing sight to see. Due to its proximity to the nesting pair, we thought this might be the male associated with the nest. After a few round trips to the southern end of the Wind River Mountains, we realized this wasn't the case. He has now taken off on his migration and looks to us as if he's landed in Cuba. Osprey tagged in the Eastern United States have also ended up in Cuba so we'll see if he stays there or keeps moving. No matter what happens from here, this bird has flown across the country, west to east, which bucks the conventional wisdom that birds follow specific flyways during migration.
