Background

Winnie the Whimbrel, banded with a green color flag "AAH" on her leg, was the first Whimbrel tracked in the Americas. She left the Virginia coast and headed north to Alaska on a record-breaking 5,000 km journey in approximately 146 hours (~ 22 miles per hour flight speed). She spent the summer on the breeding grounds near the Arctic National Park on the North Slope of Alaska. She began fall migration in July 2008 and left Alaska to stopover in Willapa Bay, WA. She then flew east over the Rocky Mountains and after several days of intense head winds, disappeared on the bank of Lake Superior.
