After more than seven months of tracking, Elvira remains wandering South of the delta of the Zaza river, probably foraging.

Background

Elvira was named after Dr. Elvira Carrillo, former Chief of the Marine Turtle Research Programme at the Ministry of Fisheries of Cuba, who passed away some years ago and devoted most of her life to studying marine turtles in Cuba.

After more than seven months of tracking, Elvira remains wandering South of the delta of the Zaza river, probably foraging, since she never returned to nest after being tagged. This is behavior that was reported in the past by Moncada et al. when they tagged several hawksbill turtles in the area and some migrated but some did not. Tracking data were not received for a while, which brought concerns about the shape of the transmitter. Lately transmissions resumed showing her still wandering around the same area.
