A project of Marine Turtle Research Group.

This one seems to be the laziest turtle ever! Since nesting 2 months ago the turtle has remained in the same area... will she prove that not all olive ridleys are migrants and stay put until she nests again in the next years? Shamsa's transmitter also seems to have stopped, with her not having travelled far. Keep an eye on the other two turtles still transmitting...

Background

Like all other Olive Ridleys tagged in this project, Shamsa was also found nesting in the Halat area of Ras Shaban beach. She took her time to lay her eggs and, like her sisters before her, received a satellite transmitter right after moving away from the nest. Ibrahim Al-Hamrashdi, an excellent turtle volunteer for us and an air traffic controller at the RAFO Base in Masirah, joined the tagging process providing invaluable help. The privilege to name the turtle was his and he named her after the sun.
